Ukrainian feminist group draw attention to their cause(s)

An article on one of our neighboring countries.  I’m relying on your maturity in putting this one up, so make sure your comments are serious and respectful or they won’t be published/get credit.   Is this an effective form of protest?  Does it undermine the group’s ability to be taken seriously, or is this a clever way to comment on how women are taken as sex objects, or a sad comment on the political apathy of the population at large?  Do women have a special perspective to bring to politics which men cannot?

It seems that most of the group members are in their twenties.  There are a number of theories as to why young people have a tendency to be more politically active, and especially more involved in protesting.  Why do you think this is the case?  Have you ever been involved in a protest?  Do you admire these women for what they are trying to do?

  1. Nowadays, involvement of women in politics is quite common, even in Slovakia where we have our first women prime minister. However , there is a ground for legal and institutional discrimination of women when women in parliament appear to be missing. This may be the case of Ukraine, where a new movement called Femen emerged, with the main aim „ to improve the role of women in Ukraine's male-dominated, post-Soviet society”. Fortunately, these women figured out, how to grab the attention of male dominated society. Maybe a bit simplistic, but certainly practical ,topless demonstrations already managed to touch the Russian president. It is well known, that exposing politicians to women’s beauty is often the only way of challenging or even discrediting them. In a short, two years long history of this movement, it already got along to address several women right agendas.

Sex industry, with flourishing pornography on Internet appears to be a really “hot” topic these days. Femen movement, as a famine based movement is to support equal rights, equal opportunities and equal pay for comparable work of both sexes. In addition it shows even a radical oppressing stand against pornography, that tends to be an issue promoted only by the radical feminists. They argue, that unlike most women, many men tend to separate sex from love, trust and respect. This men’s attitude, in turn, is evident in the attitude toward women that is displayed in pornographic pictures and literature. There women are depicted as sex objects, rather than as living people. In addition they are shown to enjoy pain, degradation, humiliation, subservience to men, who are cruel and uncaring. Therefore not surprisingly, radical feminists tend to wage legal and political war against pornography.

Even I personally agree with this stand. Masculine power is systematic and pervasive. This is why pictures of naked or nearly naked women are used to sell almost everything, from coffee to cars. This motivates older men to divorce their wives to marry much younger women, whom they exhibit as their trophies. Women are just too often systematically exploited and oppressed in public areas. When oneself or a group feels oppressed, it must fight for equality and justice, as was done against racism or lack of freedom of religion. I am asking why are women, the nicest creatures on earth, to be discriminated or ignored in politics and other areas, or even worse targets of sexism.
