Nicking Cave’s style

This is the last entry you can comment on for mid-November to mid-December

What do you think about how Nick Cave describes the creative process?  Is he right about the limitations and dangers of AI technologies like chatGPT?  Can chatGPT be used as a creative tool, or is it destined to always produce something inauthentic and derivative?

  1. This article definitely covers very relevant points, as AI has become a large portion of our lives and it is a very controversial topic among various age groups and generations.
Side note: I am unaware of who Nick Cave is, I know nothing about his style, therefore I was not able to fully judge the way chat GPT generated the song, although that might not be important. Overall, I agree with the article. I think that chat GPT is one of the many ways that contribute to killing our brain cells as they only encourage us to stop thinking and waste our time that could otherwise have been used productively. Although, I think when used correctly, chat GPT can assist as a great tool to enhance one’s creative side by giving them a brief idea of what they want to create or serve as a starting point that could inspire their future moves.

All things considered, I think AI is very scary and the more it advances, the scarier and more threatening it becomes, as one day it might grow to be smarter than its creators. One point that was mentioned in the article was interesting. It was the one that suggested whether AI helps us move closer to a utopian future or to our destruction. This may be fully subjective as not everyone’s vision of a utopian world is the same, but in my opinion, AI brings us closer to a dystopian future, rather than a utopian one. To a future where people fully rely on AI to do all their work for them (this might be nice in the short run, however long-term it is not beneficial for anyone). I often think about what IT engineers think about AI. They most likely think of it as great and impressive technology, which it most certainly is, but do they think about its consequences? Do they think about the fact that eventually no humans will be needed for jobs as AI will work as a much faster and cheaper force? Maybe they do not feel threatened by this at the moment, as almost all apps began using AI and those engineers are the one’s profiting off of this. But I genuinely believe that at some point, sooner rather than later, AI will be able to programme itself and enhance without the assistance of humans and that really frightens me.

As for this song, or songs in general, I find it incredibly insulting to artists and song-writers and producers, as their work can be “mimicked” or replaced in a matter of seconds, completely dismissing their hard work and time that was put into creating whatever it is they have created. However I suppose this particular point could be applied to all areas, not just creating songs. As briefly mentioned in the article, I think the one thing AI cannot do, at least for now, is add soul and a deeper meaning into a song to create a message. As AI has no memories, past experiences or previous adventures, it has no way of relating to events, reminiscing over memories and conveying messages like many (human) artists can and work hard to do just that.

I enjoyed reading this article, as it is something that is rather interesting to me, but the more I read about AI, the more infuriated I get? I’m not sure if I’m entitled to feel this way about this particular thing, as no matter what I do it will not change its enhancement or improvement. I guess it makes me angry because it determines the future I will live in and a future my kids will possibly grow up in. I often think about what times were like before AI, phones, computers,... and I’m quite jealous as I was not born yet to experience such times.

  2. Artificial intelligence (AI) is very interesting to me. It is a highly relevant science that is used by almost everyone I know. In this article, Nick Cave reacts to the song generated by ChatGPT using his style of songwriting that was sent to him by a fan. He talks about his dislike for this kind of use of AI and argues that it will never be able to make such art as a human. He points out that artificial intelligence has no emotions and no morals, and that it does not know suffering thus it may never know how to portray emotion through art as a human. I strongly agree with this statement. I think that AI can be of help in creative processes such as graphic design and creative writing. But that is it, it can merely help the artist. I think that artists can express themselves in ways that AI will never be able to as it has no conscious, no sense of life. Emotions are seen behind music and paintings, emotions that a computer system has no chance of understanding or feeling.

I also think that this topic opens another which is how AI may take over many jobs, not only in the spectrum of art but also outside of it. I think that as AI takes over jobs new ones, such that we are not aware of at the moment, will arise out of it. Some jobs can be replaced, such that require repetitive physical work. The problem is that the jobs being automated are the jobs that people want and the jobs that are not being automated are the ones that are staying. This process is most likely unstoppable and will happen over some time, not all at once. And while it may cause the “destruction” of some jobs, I believe that it will bring new and hopefully better ones in its place. Since this is something that is already happening, the only thing we can do, in my opinion, is to learn how to work with AI in a way that helps us, not in a way that replaces things that we can do on our own. If our job opportunities are taken away, we should not let our skills fade away and let AI take them away as well.
