Have you ever noticed how news articles about important women often focus on unimportant aspects such as physical appearance, manner and voice, or on their private rather than public life (their home, children or husband)? Why is this? Should it be changed?
Magazines and newspapers are filled with profiles of interesting people. However, after reading the article about unimportant aspects that writers focus on, I have realized that authors of these profiles and articles concentrate more on the first impression the person makes, that on the absorbing thoughts and ideas the person may have. More specifically, men authors are focusing more on the first impression a woman they are writing about had on them.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, the reason for writers describing the looks and behavior of women in their articles is pretty obvious. Physical appearance of humans, in particular those attributed which are regarded as important for physical attractiveness, significantly affect the development of personality and social relations. Ones appearance, body language, demeanor, mannerisms, and how people are dressed makes a first impression. The looks, clothes and hairstyle in combination with the manners and communication skills of a person all contribute to the image a person makes about you in a short time. People observe these characteristics and make an general idea about the person, without even knowing him/her. All human do it. Making a first impression about a person is something that people do unconsciously without realizing it. Thats why taking care of physical appearance is so important. Most women seem to realize this, and do their best to stay neat.
I think that men authors write more about a physical appearance of a woman because often times they think that looks are the most important thing for women. Focusing more on the woman's looks may also be because of her physical attractiveness. In contrast, women understand other women better, so they try to write more about important issues than the physical appearance of the female. Of course both men and women make a first impression, but men have a bigger tendency to write about the women's one. I am not a feminist, but maybe it is a bit disrespectful to think that looks and clothes are the only thing that matters to women.
I am under an impression that most men writers are extremely influenced by the first impression a female made on them. Most readers are not interested by the skirt or color of nails she had. I think that that women should write more articles that men about women. I don’t mean to discriminate, but globally I think that females better understand other females.
