Someone in my situation...
What do you think about the requirements for obtaining a residence permit here? Do you think Fernando’s experience is a typical one? Should Slovakia encourage or discourage immigrants? Is the Migration Information Center a good idea?

In the past few years, the number of immigrants in Slovakia is rising, mainly because Slovakia is in the European Union and is one of the countries in Europe which had a great progress in the economy. However, the Migration Information Center is in my opinion of big help for foreigners which want to live in Slovakia. A great example of an immigrant which found help in Migration Information Center is Fernando, who said “It was a breakthrough step in our quest to find out all the things we needed to do,”.
ReplyDeleteAnother reason, why I think that, the Migration Information Center is a good idea is that, I know how hard it was for my mother as an immigrant. My mother is Russian, and when she came to Slovakia with my father, who is Slovak, she did not know anything about how to get a residence permit. She had a hard time finding help from people who knew something about how to get a residence permits and other useful information. Someone, who could make the whole process of getting a permit faster and without any complications.
Moreover, what shocked me the most was, when a strange man came to our house to check on my mother if she is still together with my farther. I know that some people get married just to have a permit but still I think it’s too much. I also understand how Fernando feels sometimes in a society with a different country. Basically he feels different. A great example is that, my mother never speaks with me Russian, and I can’t talk to her in Russian, when we are in a supermarket or anywhere else where many people are. She just doesn’t want to feel different. Additionally, as Fernando, my mother is not friends with many people from the country she come from, even though they are many Russians in Slovakia. The reason why, is that, she knew she would in this way, get used to Slovak culture and find Slovak friends much faster.
I personally think the requirements for obtaining a residence permit in Slovakia are okay. However, I don’t think immigrants should have their passport all the time with them. I think driving license and other papers should be enough. Furthermore, I think Slovakia should encourage immigrants because it helps the economy, creates a better education at schools and so on.
